Mystery Book Recommendations for a Good Night In

A rainy night, an open fire, a cozy lounge chair and a glass of good wine — these are almost the perfect mix of ingredients for a fantastic night in. The only thing missing is a good mystery book to curl up with, one so gripping that each time you finish a page you say the next one will be the last before you sleep, only to find yourself still reading when dawn breaks many hours later.

There is something about this genre that captures us. Perhaps it is the escape into a safe thrill, or the allure of the inherently good detective fighting for justice…or the moral ambiguity of the same as they fight against themselves as much as the bad guy. Whatever the reason, the twist and turns of these four mystery books will be sure to have you captivated, long after your eyes are heavy and you know you should have slept hours ago. You’d better warn your boss that you’re going to be coming in late tomorrow. Read the rest of this entry »

DOGS HAVE FEELINGS TOO!

puppy running .Hi, Ms. Spunky here.

I want to talk to you about doggie feelings.

Dogs have feelings?  Of course they do.

Plus we not only understand our own feelings we also understand yours!

When Dr. Richards is sad, I put a paw on her leg or nuzzle my nose against her arm. I might even hop into her lap. Dr. Richards has always known that I know when she needs some extra love, but recently she actually found an article that tells her why. Researchers in Hungary have confirmed that canines understand humans’ feelings. They trained a dozen brave dogs to sit still long enough to be placed in an MRI scanner – personally, I start to wiggle just thinking about it – but these dogs tolerated it and the scientists discovered how similar a dog’s brain is to that of a human.

While the dogs were in the scanner, they listened to 200 everyday people noises as well as noise made by dogs. The scientists then looked at what parts of their brains lit up. Apparently, a little patch of our brains is devoted to figuring out emotions. The dogs’ brains light up when they hear happy barks or giggles and it doesn’t respond to sad growls or whines.

They then put headphones on each dog and let them listen to three types of sounds: human voices, dog sounds and environmental noises, such as a hammer hitting a nail or a phone ringing. The team then looked to see which parts of the brain responded.

Just like humans, the dogs have a little patch of neurons that light up when they hear voices of their own species — other dogs barking, growling or whining. Plus they also have a region located in the same place as people (near the ears) that is sensitive to emotional tones in both human and dog voices.

No wonder Dr. Richards and I love each other so much. I bet our brains light up at the same time! Plus a good doggie detective like me knows a person’s voice tone might just be the final clue that breask a case wide open.

Details of the study were published in the journal Current Biology in February 2014. You can also watch a video of the dogs in the scanner.

Adopt a Mutt: Why Mutts Are Awesome!

mutt portrait If it is that time in your life when you are ready to expand your family by adding a furry companion, one of the most overlooked and forgotten options is considering the faithful mutt!

Don’t get me wrong. As a diehard animal lover, I love and adore all dogs, from a stout Alaskan Malamute to a stumpy little Corgi! However, adopting a cross breed into your family has many benefits, and here are a few reasons why I think mutts make amazing candidates for filling the position of your newest family member. The Best Fictional Animal Characters of All Time

lassie Some of our most beloved fictional characters are animals. Many a great film or book has an animal taking center stage, just ready to steal the hearts of the audience. Think back to your favorite childhood movies and you will probably think of Bambi and Old Yeller, Puss in Boots or Donkey, Dumbo or Tom and Jerry.

Whether it is crime fighting, child rescuing, or mystery solving, these fictional animals are making friends and defeating the bad guys wherever they go, and, in the process, touching our hearts so much that sometimes we care more about their outcome than that of their human companions.

In honor of all animal characters, Spunky, the beloved protagonist of the Spunky Murder Mystery Series, and I celebrate ten of the best, with a special focus on those ones that kick some serious bad-guy butt! Read the rest of this entry »

Mystery Book Reviews: The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency Series

The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency book cover The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series is one of my favorite comfort reads. The unhurried, peaceful nature of these stories makes you want to curl up on a comfy chair and drink a glass of bush tea. Never had bush tea? Well, once you meet Mma Ramotswe and her assistant Mma Makutsi, you’ll know all about it.

By the way, “Mma” is the term used to address women in Botswana, Africa. For example, down here in Alabama, it is a sign of respect when young people call me Miss Holly. In Botswana, I would be called Mma Holly.

What? You have never heard of an African detective? Well, then you are certainly in for a delightful adventure when you meet Precious Ramotswe. She is not only precious in nature, but that is also her real name. Read the rest of this entry »

The Sherlock Fandom Explained: Sherlock vs Elementary

Benedict Cumberbatch vs. Jonny Lee Miller Over the past few years the Sherlock fandom has exploded and grown in popularity with the creation of multiple TV series and films dedicated to Arthur Conan Doyle’s finest work. There’s the BBC’s Sherlock series, CBS’s Elementary, and, of course, the popular film where the character of Sherlock himself was played by actor Robert Downey Jr.

A fandom is a community, large or small, that follows and supports books, films, artists or even individual actors! Thanks to modern day adaptations, fans of Sherlock now have a large variety of content to keep them going after finishing off the original novels. However, the two recent television shows mentioned above have caused quite a deal of controversy within the Sherlock fandom with fans debating which is better: Sherlock or Elementary? 5 Halloween Pet Safety Tips

halloween pumpkin Given the three mystery books I’ve written with the help of my menagerie, our family obviously loves mysteries. But when it comes to Halloween, we should all strive to keep the spookiness and hazards away from our cats and dogs. Halloween can be a very confusing event for many of them. Yes, there are some adorable pet costumes for you (and perhaps them) to enjoy, but from endlessly opening the door for trick-or-treaters, to all that candy lying around, to too many Halloween pranksters, there can be some perils as well.

Help remove danger and stress this year by remembering these five easy tips. Read the rest of this entry »

10 Ways to Tell You’re a True Cat Lover

cat lovers Let’s face it — cats have a bit of a bad reputation. Our favorite feline companions are often labeled “aloof” or “arrogant” and sometimes even “feral.” Own too many of them and all of a sudden you’re the “crazy cat lady” and someone calls Animal Control. Seems unfair. After all, nobody has ever heard of a “crazy dog lady” now have they? Are you single and own a cat? Wow, people probably send you to singles mixers to get you “out of the house and meeting humans.” Read the rest of this entry »

Dinner with a Detective: Miss Marple vs. Hercule Poirot

Miss Marple vs Hercule Poirot Dame Agatha Christie…what a lady! The world’s foremost mystery writer of all time, Agatha Christie’s books have been translated in over 40 languages and have sold over two billion copies.

Listen to this: She wrote 78 mystery novels, 19 plays, over 100 short stories, 2 books of poetry, a children’s book, and 2 autobiographies. Whew! I am tired simply typing her résumé. Somehow, she also managed to write an additional 6 romance novels (under the name of Mary Westmacott).

In fact, Christie managed to write an average of two novels a year through most of her life. Only the Bible and Shakespeare have outsold her. How did she find the time? No, really, how did she do it? I sure would like a touch of her magic. Was it her pure love of writing or absolute dedication to her craft? Read the rest of this entry »

Cat and Dog Body Language Can Tell You A Lot!

Spunky and Fearless, Spunky Murder Mysteries Hi there, Ms. Spunky here. Did you know dogs are great interpreters of human body language? That’s because we study you very carefully. Well, I shouldn’t speak for the cats, but humans have always fascinated me. How can I put it…humans are better than a flying stick, and more special than a bouncing ball! Now, I wouldn’t say all humans are better than a lamb chop, but they all are certainly a very special breed.

Did you know that dogs and cats also have their own body language? We are always showing you when we are happy, scared or angry. If you are observant, you can decipher what we are trying to tell you by our body language and the sounds we make.

That is one match up I’d love to read about!

Her side business is helping battered women with their abusive boyfriends or husbands. Does she sound like a sweet (and boring) social worker to you? – No way! My parents divorced three years ago. I am now 16. Six months ago, my mother began dating another man, and now they are getting serious. I am very worried they’ll marry and that he will become my stepfather. I can’t stand the man. He is a rich, loud, arrogant jerk who told my mother he thinks all kids should be sent away to boarding school. I did talk to my Dad about the situation and he says I could come and live with him if my mother would allow it (she has primary custody), but I know it would break her heart if I left her. Strange Cat Behavior: Do Your Cats Like to Be Bopped?

tabby cat I live with a whole passel of cats. Since I am a terrier mutt, and not a cat, I had to learn a thing or two about these felines. I came to accept that they see the world differently than a dog, and, of course, they are convinced they’re the superior species. I am kind and let them keep their illusions. What I do know is that cats make great buddies and have very special talents, which have proved invaluable to me on many occasion.

The Need to Be Busy: Are Humans Really Hamsters?

hamster wheel Today, I stood outside and observed the peacefulness of my animals as they lay in the shade.

I thought: Why do we humans hurry so much? We hurry at everything. We hurry to eat breakfast, hurry to get into our cars, hurry to get to the traffic light, hurry to get to work, hurry to get through the day, hurry to get home, and then hurry through dinner so we can plunk down in front of the TV. The only thing we do not seem to hurry at is getting up in the morning.

Cats vs. Dogs: Name Their Main Differences!

cats vs dogs Hi, Spunky here –

This morning, my cat buddy Fearless and I were having one of our well known debates. This one was about the differences between cats and dogs. Since we are pals, we do not debate if a cat or a dog is the superior species. We believe if a cat or dog is given the right human, then either one can supply a great outpouring of love and affection. Which, as you know, is our primary job on this planet. For us it isn’t about which is the better species, it’s about the differences between them. Read the rest of this entry »

Spunky’s Free Advice: Now You Too Can Get Our Wise Counsel

Hi there – Spunky here.

Our newest book, An Army of Noses, is marching right along.

In our books, we often help humans, and we have decided it is time to reach out and try to help some of our other two-legged friends — the ones who visit us here!

If you have a problem, post it in the comments section below. You can do it anonymously if you want. The boys and I will read them all, put our heads together and send answers to as many as we can. (I will not be insulted if you specify that you would prefer cat advice — some people do prefer a cat’s viewpoint.) If you want to keep it all hush-hush, then go to our contact page and send us a private email. We will get back to you as soon as we can.

Please Remember: We are not professionals and we are only giving our opinion. This should not be construed as professional counseling. We are, after all, wise — but not human.

The ARMY has ARRIVED!

Our newest book – An Army of Noses – has just been released on Amazon.com

Cropped front cover An Army of Noses JPEG

An Army of Noses is our third book in my Spunky Murder Mystery Series. The cats are so excited they are jumping up and down.

Of course I am very thrilled too, but a respectable terrier-mutt can’t be seen jumping up and down over a book release.

But, I’ll tell you a secret – when the cats weren’t looking I did run full-out around the yard – twice! We can’t wait for you to get your noses into this mystery. We think you are going to love meeting our new friends and of course you will get to spend a lot of quality time with me and the boys. Check it out and let us know what you think. We love to hear from all of you.

Only Days Away!

We just got the manuscript back from the proofreader! She found a few errors, but not too many – I think that’s because we have a great editor. His name is John Daniels and he too is an animal lover. I think that is why he loves it every time Mom sends him a new book. He has become one of our biggest fans! Why not join the club? Start with our first adventure, The Nose Knows.

We’d love to hear what you think. Write a review here or on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or at AuthorHouse. It’s not hard and it doesn’t have to be fancy – short – sweet or sassy – will be just fine.

Thanks for coming to our blog to visit us. We love it when people pop in.

I wonder – what do you think the most determined breed of dog might be? I choose to not call us stubborn because there is always a goal to our behavior – the question is – will the human be smart enough to figure it out?

Let us know your opinion on the most determined dog.

Hey, my doggie opinion is that every single cat I have ever known is “determined”, it does not matter what their breed is – do you humans agree?

Hello my fellow felines; humans asleep? Dogs asleep? Mice in their holes?

Then welcome to my blog.  But don’t worry we won’t have to sneak around much longer because we’re getting close to actually being in charge.   No we’re not planning on leaving an intimidatingly large dead Eagle on the White House lawn, or rolling a giant ball of yarn over the Senate.  We’re using our cuteness to win over the poor hapless humans, check out the success of agent Hank.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2236314/Hank-cat-comes-race-U-S-Senate-seat-urging-electorate-vote-humans-out.html

After fooling his poor human owner into running Hank as a candidate for Senate for a joke, Hank came third but there’s always next time. And after that? Well put it this way the White House may be getting a cat flap.  Or a really small cat door and a human flap next to it.

So if we cats take our rightful place in charge what do we do?

Here are my suggestions future President Hank.

1  Cheese to be banned, its a waste of good cream.

2  Spray bottles of water need to be licensed and have a 6 month waiting period.

3  Double the amount of social security payments to any old lady with more than 3 cats.

4  Legalize catnip.

5  Death Valley to be reclassified as a national cat litter box.

6  FBI to form a interstate task force to prevent hate crimes against cats.

Mind you the FBI would be headed up by my old friend Spunky, he has a nose for crime. Don’t believe me? Check out his books, I will of course be head of the CIA (to be renamed Cat Intelligence Agency).  And Fearless will head up the military, not that there’ll be much need for a large army. Fearless is a seriously tough cat.

REMEMBER TO VOTE!

The sad cat cafe

The sad cat cafe
Greetings my fellow felines! Now before you carry on reading; have you checked if your humans are asleep? Are you sure?   I’m looking at you Ginger Gerry, you nearly got caught twice googling the world’s largest ball of yard. Remember cat nip and internet don’t mix.Now this week I’ve been alarmed by the latest development from the world of humans. Cat cafes!

http://www.businessinsider.com/london-to-get-its-first-ever-cat-cafe-2013-1

So the humans go to one of these cafes and order some food or those weird hot drinks they like. And then we  parade in front of them and they get to touch our beautiful fur. Hey, do they even wash their hands first? They can get us all sticky and what if one of them has been eating a sandwich with tofu in it and we’ve got to lick that stuff off our fur. YUCK!

Now when I think back to the days when I was a spy and an international cat of mystery, this cafe activity would have been a marvelous opportunity. It would have offered me a chance to spy on the humans and unobtrusively share secrets with my fellow spy cats. But now it’s just seems wrong, I mean if you sauntered into a regular cafe and tried to stroke one of the human waitresses hair you’d be in trouble. And frankly a club where people eat while they watch you strut your stuff and they get to put   their hand on your tail! Well, I believe humans have a name for that kind of club and it’s not a very nice one!

I was discussing this with Fearless online the other night, he was just back from his latest adventure with Spunky the greatest detective dog since Sherlock Bones (what you thought Sherlock was human? Silly feline). It was kept strictly hush hush, top secret –need to know stuff – we’ll keep it just between you, me, Fearless and the Amazon Kindle store. Fearless was of the opinion that a cat cafe only involved cats and their milk in bowls. Now add to that picture a human chewing on a meatball sub who then tries to rub your fur—well, the rest is best left to your imagination. Got to go I’m emailing the head of Starbucks with an idea for genuinely getting cat stuff into their cafes. I call it a Cattucino, a dash of coffee, a lot of cream, and a generous splash of tuna   c’est magnifique!

Hello and welcome from your hero

Good day to you my fellow felines!

But first of all please check there are any humans around? Are you sure? Is that door nicely secure? Excellent -remember the knowledge that we cats can use the internet is one of our most closely guarded secrets. So make sure you clear your search history before logging off. Just last week I had to help cover up for a foolish tabby in Skoke Illinois who’s owners found a mysterious ebay order for; 2 lbs of catnip and 200 feet of yarn. He was a very foolish feline and as a punishment gets only dry cat food at night, when he used get get herring. Yes he sleeps without the fishes. And the least said the better about the poor little old lady who found 2 hours of “Persians gone wild” on her computer!
My codename  is Captain Catsup (my poor foolish human owners cal me Tinkerbell!) I’m Cat secret agent and defender of cat kind everywhere. And I will be keeping you up to date on my adventures over the coming weeks. Also I will be sharing my thoughts about a book my careless human  left lying around. It’s a mystery about a group of cats who help humans! And they do it with a dog! If that is true, then it must be very comical. Anyway be  seeing you, I can hear the humans stirring so signing out for now. And keep watching those cat flaps – let no intruders in!

Another Review for THE NOSE KNOWS

“As a mystery story the pace is well kept, the story does not lag and it keeps the reader guessing. The characters are interesting and intelligently written. In addition, it is also a heartwarming story, which takes the reader on an emotional ride that will …make you laugh, cry, cringe, sympathize and cheer. This is an enjoyable book that is appropriate for readers of all ages; I recommend it as a satisfying summer read.”

REVIEWS ARE COMING IN!

Here is one from a reader from BOOKPLEX:

” The mystery in THE NOSE KNOWS is excellent, very well done and with edge-of-your-seat moments. Once I reached the part of the story where Spanky and her buddies try to help and solve who is scaring their human mother I couldn’t put the book down…This is a very fun read”
