As we blogged about recently, we are now accepting calls for advice from our readers, which we (Spunky, Dr. Richards, and pals) will do our best to answer! The latest request for our wise counsel follows, along with our response:
I want a boyfriend so badly, my heart is about to break. I am 13, not pretty, with above average smarts, and I am a little overweight. All the girls I know have really cool boyfriends. One of the geeks, Joey, asked me out, but my friends would bust a gut laughing at me if I said yes. Joey is a nice guy and he has always been sweet to me, but I don’t see how I could possibly be seen with him. The school dance is in two weeks and I am really feeling desperate. Help! – Susie M.
My Dear Susie M,
First thing you must do is apply one of my basic rules and ask yourself this: What is the worst scenario and how can you prevent it from happening? If staying home alone on the night of the dance is what you really want to avoid, then you will need to take some risks. You either ask a boy out yourself, or you say yes to Joey. He sounds like someone you are comfortable being with and you said he treats you well. If your friends laugh, you should hold up your head and quietly say, “Hey, some of the richest men in the WORLD are geeks! In fact, geeks are the new chic!” (Susie, just so you can back up your claim, Mark Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook, is worth 32 billion dollars! And Bill Gates, the guy who started Microsoft, is now worth 80 billion dollars. Both were geeks, but no one is laughing at them now.)
As a terrier-mutt, I know I am not a pretty dog, but my ways dazzle everyone and soon they say I’m the smartest, cutest dog they have ever seen. It is not about looks, it is all about attitude. Hold your head up high and act like a person you can be proud of and pretty soon — I guarantee it — you will become that person.
So what if you’re not a fluffy pedigree? Who cares?! Be the best mutt in the pack! Besides, who knows, you and Joey might be on your way to greatness, too.
If you have a problem, please submit it via the comment form below, or send us an email via our contact page. We look forward to hearing from you!
